Thoughts on VAT and Respecting the Decisions of Digital Artists

Since announcing that we found a way to keep Deedee's Digis open for business, I've had a lot of inquiries from other digital artists requesting source info. To be honest, I did a ton of research on this, including talking with the financial gurus in my life, and encourage all other artists to do the same for their own peace of mind before making any decisions. Still, I am always happy to help, so here are two of the most straight-forward links about the VAT tax/digital services issue, and that ultimately helped me decide how to move forward:

Sadly, I've also been hearing a lot about how other digi artists are being "pressured" and in some cases outright "bullied," based on my decision, to follow suit. Dearest crafty friends, I ask that you please not do this! Share the information and the links that I've provided, by all means, but please understand and respect that what might be workable and "right" for me may not be for another artist.

Running a digi business is not easy to start with, let alone trying to reconfigure one's whole business -- and, yes, in some ways, one's life! -- around these complicated laws. The solution that I've decided on is one that works for me, based on my time availability, the financial commitments that I have, and the capabilities of the software that runs my shop site. But it should not be assumed that any other artist has the same perfect combination of circumstances, or that even if they did, they would feel that this is the right solution for them.

I won't harp on about this, dear friends, as it's not what this blog is about, but I do ask that you please consider what I've said, and be respectful at all times and in all ways of the rights of other digital artists to decide for themselves what is right for them.

Wishing you a blessed start to your week!

  1. Well said Deedee. Everybody has a different story and therefore must be allowed to travel their own paths. We can provide information and suggestions but must let people make their own choices whatever the life situation is. Of course above all we can pray. :)

  2. Thank you, Deedee. No one should be pressured to do anything. Everyone's personal situation is different. I will share this post with anyone who's looking for info. I'm so glad everything worked out for you, even though I know it's a lot of extra time and work involved.

  3. I a so happy that things worked out for you. Welcome back!
I am also happy to see you sharing the info and reminding people that each digi shop owner needs to make the decisions that are best for them at the time they make it.
    Crafty hugs,
